Between March and September 2026, Google released two core updates and four spam updates. It also published its first official guide to appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and added AI reporting to Search Console. If your SEO plan was set two or three years ago, several of its assumptions now need checking.
Google’s own guidance says the fundamentals still matter most. What has changed is where visibility appears, how it should be measured and which shortcuts now carry risk. These are the 11 areas worth revisiting before 2027.
- Measure enquiries, not rankings
AI Overviews appeared on about 48% of the queries BrightEdge tracked in February 2026, up from roughly 31% a year earlier. When one appears, fewer people click. Pew Research found in 2025 that US users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one.
So your traffic can fall while your rankings hold. Judge SEO on the outcomes it produces: calls, form fills, bookings and cost per lead from organic search.
- Check what this year’s updates changed
Compare your organic traffic and enquiries against the update dates:
- Core updates: 27 March–8 April and 21 May–2 June
- Spam updates: March, June, August and September
A decline that starts with a core update usually reflects how your content compares with competitors. It is not a penalty. Google advises waiting at least a week after an update finishes before drawing conclusions.
- Publish what competitors can’t copy
Google’s May 2026 guide stresses “non-commodity” content, meaning information people can’t find everywhere else. A dental clinic can explain its own treatment process. A real estate developer can share actual handover timelines from past projects. A rewritten summary of other people’s pages gives Google little reason to rank or cite you.
- Stop paying for AI shortcuts
Many businesses are being sold “GEO” add-ons such as llms.txt files, AI-specific schema or content cut into small chunks. Google’s guide says none of these is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, because those features use the same index and ranking systems as regular search.
Google also clarified in May 2026 that its spam policies cover attempts to manipulate AI answers. Some of these shortcuts are wasted spend. Others are a risk.
- Protect your money pages first
AI Overviews appear far more often on informational searches than on commercial ones. Someone asking how a home loan works may never click a result. Someone looking for a lender still compares options.
Before you chase AI visibility for blog content, make sure your service, product and location pages are fast, clear and persuasive. For most businesses, those are the pages that produce enquiries.
- Rework your Google Business Profile
Google began phasing out the Q&A section on Business Profiles in late 2025. Questions about your business are increasingly answered by AI, drawing on your profile, reviews and website.
That changes the job. Keep categories, services, hours and photos accurate, and publish clear answers to common customer questions on your own site, where you control the wording. For local SEO in Bangalore, the profile is often the first thing a customer sees, so it needs regular attention.
- Keep reviews recent
Customers give less weight to old reviews. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of US consumers, 74% said they look for reviews written in the last three months. Indian buyers may behave differently, but the direction is worth noting.
Ask for a review after every completed job or appointment and reply to the ones you receive. Never buy or script reviews.
- Make location pages earn their place
A page for Koramangala or Electronic City helps only if it says something specific to that area: the branch address, the team, the services offered, parking and timings. Pages that swap the area name into the same template add little, and Google’s spam policies treat doorway pages as spam.
If many of your customers speak Kannada, consider Kannada content as well. Google’s AI Mode has supported the language since October 2025.
- Fix speed and responsiveness
Core Web Vitals are still a ranking signal, and the “good” thresholds haven’t changed:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): under 2.5 seconds
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): under 200 milliseconds
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): under 0.1
INP measures how quickly a page responds to taps and clicks. If your site runs on React or Next.js, check that heavy scripts aren’t slowing responses or stopping search engines from rendering content. Test on mid-range phones over mobile data, not only on office Wi-Fi.
- Describe your business the same way everywhere
Search engines and AI tools build their picture of your business from many sources. Your name, address, phone number, services and description should match across your website, your Business Profile and directories such as Justdial, IndiaMART or Practo.
This is where SEO and brand work overlap. If a branding agency in Bangalore is refreshing your positioning, make sure the new descriptions reach every listing, not just your website.
- Ask your agency harder questions
Whether your SEO is handled in-house or by an SEO agency in Bangalore, your review before 2027 should ask:
- Which enquiries and sales came from organic search this year?
- How did the 2026 updates affect our key pages?
- Are we paying for anything Google says isn’t needed?
- Does any current tactic carry spam-policy risk?
Be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
Where to start
Few businesses need to tackle all eleven at once. Start with measurement, because it shows where the other priorities matter most. Next, fix anything that directly affects your enquiry pages: your Business Profile, reviews, site speed and service pages. The rest can go into your SEO plan for 2027.
FAQs
What SEO changes should Bangalore businesses make before 2027?
Start by judging SEO on enquiries and cost per lead rather than rankings. Then check how the 2026 updates affected your key pages, publish original content competitors can’t copy, and drop paid “AI shortcuts” that Google says aren’t needed. For local visibility, keep your Google Business Profile accurate, collect recent reviews and meet Core Web Vitals thresholds.
Is SEO still worth investing in now that AI Overviews exist?
Yes. Google says its AI features are built on the same ranking and quality systems as regular search, so pages that rank well and offer original information are more likely to be drawn on. BrightEdge’s data also shows that just over half of the queries it tracks still show no AI Overview at all.
How long before SEO changes show results?
Updates to your Business Profile and directory listings often show up sooner. Content and technical improvements take longer. Google’s own guidance says SEO work typically needs four months to a year to show its potential benefit.
